Anyone who controls their mount through ASCOM can use an EQDirect cable that connects the mount directly to the computer via USB (allowing use of the likes of EQMod). A popular choice are the EQDirect cables made by HitecAstro. These are based on a controller made by Prolific, which have no officially-supported drivers for Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. Anyone trying to use these beyond Windows 7 will only encounter driver problems. Thankfully there are alternatives, which use a controller made by FTDI.
The above is one such product, made by Pierro Astro. Since this is based on an FTDI controller, it has full drivers support for all versions of Windows including Windows 10. The cable is also of very solid construction with no little boxes attached and no odd soldering jobs. Astronomiser UK produce their own FTDI-based EQDirect cables for popular mount control boards, but unfortunately several friends and I have had nothing but problems with the soldering in the little boxes interconnecting the two ends of the cables.
The above Pierro Astro cable was bought from Teleskop Service - they stock EQDirect cables compatible with EQ5 control boards and EQ6 control boards. The above works perfectly for my Avalon M-Uno mount, since it has an EQ6 control board.
