Two New PixInsight Processing Tutorials: Producing an HDR Image and Combining LRGB and Narrowband

21/1/2016

Two new PixInsight processing tutorials have been added. The first one is on producing an HDR image and the second one is on enhancing broadband LRGB data with narrowband data such as that from Hydrogen-Alpha and Oxygen-III.
The first tutorial goes over the procedure to produce an HDR image out of multiple images stacked from exposures captured with different lengths. This technique is particularly useful for targets such as M42 Orion Nebula and M31 Andromeda Galaxy, reproducing detail across bright and faint regions all the same. The processes used are HDRComposition and HDRMultiscaleTransform. The procedure described applies as equally to monochrome images (LRGB or narrowband) as to One Shot Colour images. If you would like to read this tutorial, please follow this link directly to it.

The second tutorial goes over Vicent Peris' official method using the PixelMath process to combine broadband LRGB data with narrowband data such as that from Hydrogen-Alpha and Oxygen-III. The combinations discussed are enhancing the Red channel with Hydrogen-Alpha, enhancing the Green and Blue channels with Oxygen-III and finally, enhancing Luminance with Hydrogen-Alpha. If you would like to read this tutorial, please follow this link directly to it.

Question..... does your Ha, OIII combination method follow the same approach as the PI NBRGB combination script?

Also, want to thank you for all these great tutorials. I use the preprocessing tutorial every time I do an image!

Hi George,

Indeed, this technique of combining narrowband data and RGB data is what the script does in the background. It was initially described by PixInsight developer Vicent Peris, which got implemented into the script. My description is the "manual method", if you will.

Thank you for your comment - it's good to know my tutorials are helpful to you! :)

Best Regards,
Kayron
